Dear Cooperators,
We’re in the heat of the summer now, and our busy season is in full swing here with the co-op. Just as last summer, we are doing lots of events and fundraisers, and we have even more this summer than last. We are really enjoying seeing you at our events, and love that you want to support us so much! That bodes well for the future of our store.
Our last restaurant FUNdraiser Event was at Hi-Lo’s 15th Street Cafe in Bremerton, and it was a huge success — YOU all came out in droves, and doubled Hi-Lo’s best day record! This is the second FUNdraiser Event we’ve done — the first was in the spring at Monica’s Waterfront Bakery & Cafe in Silverdale. Both of these events have been so successful, we’ve decided to continue them quarterly, so expect to see one per season at a local restaurant. In each case, the restaurant gives the co-op a percentage of their day’s sales — so you get a great meal, the restaurant gets a nice bump in sales and new customers, and we get to keep some of the proceeds! Fall’s FUNdraiser Event will be somewhere in the Port Orchard area, so stay tuned…
Our next event is a partnership with The Historic Orchard Theater in Port Orchard. They will be showing the documentary, Food, Inc. from July 31 – August 6. Since this film is so closely tied to the reasons why we are working hard to build a co-op in Kitsap County, we thought it would be a great opportunity to turn it into our next fundraiser. We will get the biggest contribution from General Admission (evening) showings, so gather a group of friends and/or family and GO! Read the listing below for more details, or go to www.kitsapfoodcoop.org.
We have several more events to go before warm weather is over, including the Great Peninsula Future Fest in Port Gamble, Crosby Days in Seabeck, our next public meeting on Sept. 14, finally concluding our busy season with our Fall Fair on Oct. 3 in Southworth. Hope you enjoy them, and we’ll see you soon!
Co-op Fundraisers, Events & Announcements:
Kitsap Community Food Co-op Film Fundraiser: Food, Inc.
Grand Opening Event: July 31. Plays daily through Aug. 6
The Historic Orchard Theater, 822 Bay Street, Port Orchard, WA 98366
Showtimes TBD (Check website or call theater for showtimes) Info: (360) 850-1082
The Historic Orchard Theater, a great local independent theater in downtown Port Orchard, will be showing this fascinating documentary all about the food we eat and pick out every day in the supermarket. It’s been getting great reviews, and we are really excited to be working with the Orchard Theater on this fundraiser, as this film strikes really close to our cause to start a natural and local foods co-op.
To have a portion of your ticket price go toward the food co-op, print out our voucher (available for download at http://www.kitsapfoodcoop.org/Blog/Entries/2009/7/3_Co-op_Film_Fundraiser__Food,_Inc._files/FoodInc_WebVoucher.pdf) and bring one per party to the theater with you when you buy your ticket. Every showing will bring us in some money, and evening showings bring us the most — $4.00 per ticket! We hope to see you there at our Grand Opening Event on July 31, and we’ll be there in person to answer your questions and sign up volunteers. If you can’t come Friday night, then come anytime during the week. You won’t look at your food the same way again!
Volunteer Opportunity: Looking for Help Sewing Aprons & More
We are needing some help making a few homemade tea towel aprons to sell at our Farmers Market and booth events. Got a machine? Can you sew in a straight line? You’re qualified! The pattern is very easy, and we’re also looking for innovative ideas for men’s, women’s and children’s aprons, or other ideas. Contact Laura at laura@kitsapfoodcoop.org or call (360) 813-1301 if you are interested.
