The Kitsap County Commissioners established the Kitsap Food and Farm Policy Council (KFFPC) two weeks ago. Its stated purpose is the recognition that agriculture in all its varying forms is a vital part of Kitsap County’s culture, attraction, and economic basis. The stated goals are for the KFFPC to work with communities, businesses, agriculture and government to develop integrated and sustainable food policy and actions, and advise on issues of food production, distribution and access in Kitsap County. Another stated goal of the KFFPC is to help Kitsap residents understand and support locally grown products. This is what you, KCAA and Buy Local Food in Kitsap already work for, and now our county has officially joined us.

Many of the council members are already members of the KCAA. The names of those chosen to serve on the KFFPC are: John Ales, Bret Annear, Jerry Darnall, Monica Downen, Marilyn Holt, Sharon Howard, Dennis Hultman, Melanie Keenan, Cynthia Mora, Loretta Payne, Chris Plemmons, Jean Schanen, and Ariane Shanley. Currently, there are four representatives from each of the three county areas, plus one at-large member.

I am excited to be part of the KFFPC and look forward to bringing together the hopes, desires, and concerns of those who farm in Kitsap County and those who support Kitsap agriculture. Personally, I believe in inclusiveness, helping urban and country farmers, horsemen, ranchers, horticulturalists, nurseries, consumers, and those who provide the infrastructure that supports this.

Please make your voice heard. To this end, I invite you to contact me. The easiest way is to comment here, or e-mail me at abundantlygreen@holtcapital.com.

Together we can keep Kitsap’s happy, healthy, and secure lifestyle.
