CSA Shares Available Now For the 2010 Season

It is CSA time again for 2010. KCAA directors Marilyn Holt and Jade Pope have been busy talking to CSA farmers to get an update on what they are offering this year. Abundantly Green Farm is moving in the direction of year round production. That’s exciting.

CSA Shares Are Rich and Flavorful

Handsown and Homegrown (Sara and Jared Hankins) are adding poultry and eggs to their lineup. Wow.

I have reprinted a message from them below but feel free to visit our CSA Directory. We will update the information as soon as our farmers get it to us but we didn’t want to wait any longer to begin the 2010 promotion. These shares tend to sell out quickly because we still do not have enough farms offering them for everyone in the county that wants them. We want our members and friends toget in there soon.

“Support Local Kitsap farmers!

The CSA model is was designed to provide small farms with the financial start up to begin their season farming. We’re counting on our communities support this year, at this time, in order for us to provide you and your community with the heirloom variety grown produce that’s dear to our hearts. If you want Poulsbo grown heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, lettuces, and more please invest in our farm today. Last year we had 36 members this year we desperately need to add more supporters to our faithful four. Spread the word to neighbors, friends, and co-workers. We look forward to growing your food this year! Also, to those four members who have signed up for CSA shares for the 2010 season, thank you thank you! We love being your farmers!

Download Handsown and Homegrown CSA Brochure Here

EGGS, Poulsbo Fresh

We have eggs available! Please help spread the word that we have Poulsbo farm fresh eggs, certified organic grain & grass fed. Pink, White, Brown, and Blue are the colors of the year.

Chicken $5
Duck $6

Email us your order and your desired pickup day. Currently looking to provide eggs on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this week.

Thanks!

One of the Northwest Agriculture Business Center’s (NABC) missions is to improve the economic vitality of the agriculture industry within the northwest Washington State counties of Island, San Juan, Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom by providing business resources and hands-on guidance. Farmland preservation is another.

David Bauermeister of the Puget Sound Food Network; and
FFA Members Project Presentations
KCAA General Meeting
Silverdale Grange Hall
12535 Clear Creek Rd NW
Silverdale, WA 98383
Tuesday, March 9, 6:30 – 8:30 PM

But one of this highly successful 501 (3) c organization’s programs is state-wide and has the potential to provide huge benefits to members in Kitsap and other counties. That program is the Puget Sound Food Network.

The Network’s primary purpose is to connect all aspects of agriculture, from producer to buyer to consumer… so they can communicate, find each other, and develop mutually supportive business relationships.

At the next KCAA meeting, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday March 9, at the Silverdale Grange, the NABC’s Executive Director, David Bauermeister, will be giving what promises to be a fascinating, informative presentation on the Puget Sound Food Network and how it works.

“Bringing the farm to market is the goal of the Puget Sound Food Network,” says Bauermeister.

And receiving some of those products more directly from farm to market is one of the benefits the FreshLocal food store in Bremerton hopes to receive. Jean Schanen of FreshLocal says they joined the Network just last week.

“I joined as a result of going to a Farm to Table workshop in Mt. Vernon and I’m looking forward to exploring and using the Network, particularly in regard to new, more direct food distribution opportunities. Right now, a local producer within 25 miles will bring food to me but I have to use a food broker for most local things on the other side of the water,” says Schanen

One of the big benefits of membership in the Network for farmers is providing a venue to showcase their products, expand their market, and to sell online. Potential buyers can get product and contact information from sellers; correspondingly, farmers may also obtain contact information for possible markets, such as stores that feature locally produced items. This also applies to finished product producers such as jam and jelly makers who use local produce for their product.

Helping to promote and foster a regional coordination with other producers with like needs such as supplies and distribution cooperation is another part of the program.

But there are benefits for the ultimate consumer as well. Placing orders, paying on-line and arranging delivery with participating producers can result in tremendous savings as well as being assured of fresh local goods.

While the Puget Sound Food Network can be of direct benefit to food producers, sellers and consumers, here David Bauermeister will also be giving some useful information on some of the many outstanding projects the Network’s sponsor group, the Northwest Agriculture Business Center has been involved with helping to promote or start in their local five-county area. Some of these may stimulate ideas for similar projects here.

Local, state and federal grants and funding have been obtained for many of NABC’s projects. Projects include the following:

-establishing a permanent farmers market local in an historic building in Friday Harbor

-helping to establish “Whidbey Island Grown” local marketing group

-helping to get local farmers’ products into schools

-Greenbank Farm Training Center for new small scale farmers at Greenbank CSA

-Ten month value-added product development course

-Production of maps and guides for Arlington-Marysville Red Rooster Route and Skagit Valley Farm Guide

For people involved in local food growing, distribution and selling businesses, the March 9 meeting of the KCAA featuring Mr. Bauermeister should be a must-attend.

Two Large Farmland Preservation Efforts Are Under Way

The KCAA board is a hard working group with a determination to get things done for local food. Most all of our directors are working entrepreneurs or farmers but still feel it is important enough to dedicate considerable time and effort to thinking through what our goal should be in the category of building a local food network. For self-starters like this group the good news is that the local food space offers almost unlimited opportunities if one can only see through the obvious difficulties that arise almost immediately. Some of the KCAA directors are meeting on Saturday in Hansville to mastermind strategies for some huge local food opportunities for Kitsap County. If you want to join a get er done team working to help local agriculture you may want to join us. The details are at the end of this article.

KCAA Director Peggy Hall

With such a depth of opportunity it would be important task to attempt to budget our resources to make the greatest advance toward our goal as possible. Prior to our all day board meeting in early January I asked all of the directors to read a book entitled “The Goal” by Eliyahu Goldratt, an Israeli physicist and student of business as social forms. The book made a big impact on our deliberations and gave us some tools to organize our thinking about our tasks.

Our goal is to build a local food network. Because as of yet so few people truly understand the importance of this goal as an organization we will continue to focus on farmer and consumer education to build “the list” of people who are members of the local food network.

(Hint: To join the list just follow Become a Member of KCAA)

We have some big jobs ahead of us this year. Many of them are repeats or followups to what we started in 2009. Some are new initiatives that are begging us to begin like our new “think Local First” radio show airing soon on KITZ 1400 AM. More on that later.

Maybe you remember that last year we celebrated an event that we called the Local Food Chef Showoff. It was a pretty big deal. Nearly 400 people attended. What was really impressive to me was that our speakers that evening gave us some important information on the topic of farmland preservation and farmer succession planning. Nash Huber of Nash’s Organics and a national leader on the topic of farmland preservation spent the early part of the day touring Kitsap farms and speaking with farmers like Brian McWhorter, Marilyn Holt and Scott Hall about that. I sure learned a lot.

Nash Huber, Farmland Preservation Champion

Well, KCAA directors Scott and Peggy Hall must have taken him seriously.

Although they have been working for many years with Farmer Gerry Petersen of the Petersen Farm in Silverdale on what they call the Legacy Farm Project just last year Mr. Petersen passed away. Scott and Peggy have been working very closely with the people managing the estate to make sure that this 240 acre little piece of heaven will remain in farm production as it has for nearly 100 years rather than fall to development.

Gerald Peterson 2008

It is called the Hansville Nursery. It contains approximately 145 acres of land about 100 of which had been utilized as a Douglas Fir seedling nursery to replant harvested timber areas in the Pacific Northwest.

Several KCAA board members and others are meeting this Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 1:00 pm to visit the site and mastermind how to get this land into sustainable production, permanently.
