Buying locally is a first step to local economic self-sufficiency that every member of a community can make to help themselves and their neighbors. But is buying locally enough?

In the case of local food even if a small percentage of Kitsapians decided to buy only local food it would quickly overwhelm the production capacity of local farmers and artisan producers. In order to achieve even a ten percent market share for local producers it will require investment in what some call infrastructure:

Young farmers need to acquire farmland

Farmers markets and other vendors willing to go through the hassle of procurement from local producers need permanent facilities.

Local and regional processing facilities need to be built.

All producers and consumers need more cold storage facilities

We need increased capacity for food preservation and commercial kitchens, creameries, etc. for adding value.

The role of community banks has had a high profile on the national level with the passage of massive new federal regulation of the financial sector. Not even Congress is able at this time to predict the fallout and the rules have yet to be written as to how the new law will be implemented. But this much is clear: community banks play a crucial role in financing the growth of local businesses which historically are responsible for creation of 60% or more of new jobs in recovery phases.

Buy local and local food advocates need to better understand and work with the community banks in our communities.
