To our Canine friends and owners
Bringing your dog to the market:

Dogs are a part of the market and since the safety of our customers is
paramount to our market, we ask that dog owners observe the following
guidelines:

1. Dogs MUST be under your firm control at all times. This can be on a
leash, in a backpack or in your arms. The leash must be short enough that
your dog cannot lunge towards another animal or person, or trip someone. NO
leashes extending across the market aisles.

2. Non-aggressive dogs only! If your dog has shown aggressive behavior
towards other dogs or unfamiliar people or children, please leave them at
home until they are more at ease in a busy, noisy mixed environment. Your
dog and the folks at the market will all be more happy.

3. Please ask permission for your dog to meet another dog or person, and be
especially cautious around children- your dog may be fine, but the child may
not know that.

4. Watch your dog closely. If he is getting anxious, having a time out in
your vehicle, or in a quiet spot may be a great idea.

5. Come prepared with supplies in case there is an embarassing accident! The
market is not equipped to clean up these accidents and it is your
responsibility.

6. Leave your cat at home, for obvious reasons.

The market reserves the right to ask an owner to remove their dog from the
market place.

Thanks for helping us make the market a safe and pleasant place for
everyone!

Michele Gilles, our market day staff person, is on vacation this Saturday,so Leslee Pate is returning from last year to lend a hand. We are so excited that she will be with us. Make sure and stop by the PFM booth and say hi.

We thank you for your continued support of the PFM, we wouldn’t have a
market without you!

Thanks,
Jackie and Leslee

PS.
Remember you can use your credit, debit and Quest cards at the PFM booth.
We’re happy to help make your shopping at the PFM even easier.

It’s a sweet time at the market when the berries and cherries come in. One of our favorite recipes is for cherry salsa. You can find it on the markets’website.

Strawberries are especially delicious when added to a mix of the greens
available right now! Add some smoked cheese for a salad wow!

These fruits are easy to freeze: Pit the cherries, put in a ziploc bag and freeze.

Strawberries freeze nicely by putting on a tray in a single layer, freeze, then package them up. You’ll be able to remove as few or as many berries as you need.

Blueberries just need to be washed, stem if need be, and freeze in bags. Put the taste of summer away now for a winter taste delight!

We also want to remind you that we will be celebrating our food independence with a fourth of July market day next Saturday! It’s a first for us and we look forward to seeing you!

As your Grandmother said:  “Eat your greens!!!”

Arugula is a green with a bit of “kick” and is delicious added to salads. We like to use it on sandwiches just like lettuce.
You can also use spinach on your sandwiches for a little variety.

Kale, Spinach, and Chard can be chopped and added to stir fries, soups, stews, and vegetable medleys.

Chop it up, saute it with a little butter and olive oil, add some maple syrup and a splash of vinegar for a tasty treat.
Most greens really reduce in size when heated up. so don’t be concerned if it looks like the pot or pan is going to overflow, they will cook down.

Fry up some bacon, crumble it and add to any green for a yummy taste treat.

For a quick supper, fry up some potatoes, add chopped onion, chopped greens, cheese and scrambled eggs. Yum!

Try tasting the stems of the leaf and see if you like it, if you don’t just remove it before eating or cooking.

If you have a suggestion or recipe for using greens, send it to us in an email or drop it off at the PFM booth. We’ll put it on our website and include in future eNews editions. info@poulsbofarmersmarket.org

Thanks,
Jackie and Michele

Poulsbo Farmers Market Vendors and Customers to Benefit from Acceptance of Credit, Debit and EBT Food Stamps in 2009

Poulsbo Farmers Market Only Kitsap Market Chosen to Participate in Two-Year WSFMA Wireless Technology Pilot Project

Poulsbo, WA – March 24, 2009 – The Poulsbo Farmers Market announced today that it will begin accepting credit, debit and Electronic Benefits Transfers (EBT Food Stamps) on opening day, April 11th for the purchase of market goods, including fresh, local farm products.
The Poulsbo Farmers Market is one of twenty farmers markets across Washington State chosen through a competitive grant process to participate in a Washington State Farmers Market Association (WSFMA) Wireless Technology Pilot Project. The pilot project was made possible through the Local Farms-Healthy Kids Initiative, passed by the State Senate and House of Representatives last spring.

The Poulsbo Farmers Market is the only Kitsap-based farmers market chosen to participate in the WSFMA Wireless Technology Pilot Project.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer credit, debit and EBT Food Stamps service to our vendors and customers,” said Margaret Hudson, Poulsbo Farmers Market Board President. “No more running to the bank to get cash for market purchases required. Just bring your credit, debit, Quest or SNAP cards to the market manager’s booth to purchase tokens for use with individual vendors.”

The intent of the project is to increase access to fresh, high quality locally grown food through Washington State farmers markets for all Washington residents. Data collected from project participants throughout the two-year pilot will help measure the tangible benefits of the program on participating farmers markets, their vendors and customers in the future.

“This is an incredible opportunity to serve a segment of the population that hasn’t historically shopped for local, fresh produce at farmers markets in Washington,” said Jackie Aitchison, executive director of the Washington State Farmers Market Association. “Plus, the addition of credit/debit will enable market vendors to increase their sales, boosting their bottom line and the local economy.”

For more information about the WSFMA Wireless Technology Pilot Project or the Poulsbo Farmers Market visit Poulsbo Farmers Market or call Jackie Aitchison, Market Manager at 360-779-6720.
