My oldest son is a talented teaching and research physics professor. I got a lowly C in the basic course, but we both agree on the definition of Work = Force x Distance.
You can huff and puff all the force you want, but no distance means no work done. When a friendly face asked the friendly but patently stupid question about “work” I want to deliver a lesson that takes away stupid. But I feel hopeless as when trying to pull water uphill with a rake.
I observe lots of folks getting paid who add no, and perhaps subtract a lot of distance (let’s call it VALUE). Unless you have your own farm or other business, you probably get paid by the hour and not by the ton. Clue: Passage of time does NOT constitute productivity, value, or any other kind of distance. If we could be paid to age, I would be rich already!
The ultimate crass ignorance of this question is when it gets addressed to the spouse of a MOTHER. Even worse, it could be addressed to the spouse of a mother who is a FARMER’S WIFE.
Just what part of sanitizing, feeding, dressing, and otherwise enhancing family life is not value, productive distance? And at four in the morning, Mom drives out to check the dew to see if the alfalfa is ready for baling, because her hubby has done it for the last four nights after his 18-hour day and come up with too much or too little dew. And because Mom is better at it than he is, both agree that Mom can do the harobedding after those finished bales have let go of enough moisture so the stack won’t burn. Just because you both found Mom was better at it. I could add book to the activity list, but if you don’t get it now, you won’t.
So I won’t ask, and you won’t have to tell. If your spouse is like mine, she can outwork me, and I have put in 10 hour days in 110 degree F heat with hayhooks in both hands. Distance? I have a family to be proud of, and she put in value right along side every mile of mine.
Happy Labor Day!
