Willapa Hills Banner

Willapa Hills Farmstead Cheese is a small family run, sheep dairy farm & creamery on 146 acres in SW Washington.  Although the Willapa Hills Sheep Dairy & Creamery is located 20 miles west of Chehalis on State Route 6, the proprietors, Amy Turnbull & Stephen Hueffed have strong connections to Kitsap County.  Amy grew up on Bainbridge and Stephen spent summers in Suquamish.  When they first married they lived in Suquamish and then Indianola. Both have family residing in Kitsap.

After two years of searching for farmland throughout Western Washington, they settled on a historic farmstead near Doty and Pe Ell nearly four and a half years ago. Their flock of sixty high percentage cross East Friesian/Lacaune Ewes arrived fom Wisconsin in October of 2005.  They began milking in 2007 and making cheese in 2008.  In March of 2009 they began their first year of year-round cheese production. Willapa Hills offers a range of handcrafted fresh cheeses, yoghurt cheeses and aged blue cheeses. Blue cheese – especially made with sheep milk – is their specialty.

Stephen (possibly joined by Amy) will be here to tell us about their farm, their passion for blue cheese & the process that has gone into the development of both farm & creamery.

There will be opportunities to sample & purchase some of the cheeses
crafted by the Willapa Hills Farmstead team. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested in sheep dairying & cheese making to learn more about these subjects.

Given that holiday season is upon us, with all the associated consumption, I hope that you will all consider “consuming locally” this holiday season.  What could be better for the gourmet in your household than some fine locally produced cheese & local wine under your locally grown Christmas tree?

I never liked blue cheese, until I tried some samples from Willapa Hills at the farmer’s market in Gig Harbor this summer. Their cheese is devine! The yogurt cheese is great too! I’m looking forward to hearing about the Willapa Hills farm & creamery.

FreshLocal in downtown Bremerton will be carrying these cheeses in their market. Purchasing these locally made cheeses in this local cooperative store makes perfect sense for this holiday cheeson!

I was unable to attend the Dec. 8 meeting. I love great blue cheese and wondered if there is a local vendor of Willapa Hills Farmstead cheeses? Please email me since I’m commuting a lot between Bremerton and Seattle these days – thanks!
