Jade and Cynthia Pope
Lambs can be sold as soon as they are weaned, usually around three months of age (many are available now) and they are ready for slaughter at 6 – 9 months of age, depending on size and maturity. For custom exempt slaughter, they must be sold prior to being slaughtered. Price is based on live animal weight. The Popes can help customers arrange for slaughter and butcher once the animal has been purchased. Many customers purchase their lambs now and either take them home or arrange for later pickup and/or slaughter. Breeding stock is available for sale now too. Continue reading
PCC Farmland Trust and Farmland Preservation In Kitsap County
Established in 1999 by PCC Natural Markets as a totally separate non-profit organization, the Farmland Trust is believed to be the only 501©(3) land trust in the U.S. dedicated to the preservation in perpetuity of organic farm land. This Trust not only provides a 100 per cent tax deductible venue for those to donate who are concerned about saving farmland but also supports the continued livelihood of the local farmer. Several of the preserved farms farmers have established internship programs for future farmers to help insure the future of local farming. Continue reading

Vietnamese Local Food Tale
Approximately 70 per cent of farms in this country are still small, family-run farms but their yields seem to be maximized in part by intense cooperation and sharing of space by several generations of a family on their government-granted plot of land. The narrow, rectangular shaped houses do not take up much space and they are built upward, often with several stories rather than spread out in order to maximize farming space and house the extended family. Because of the warm climate and the large Mekong River Delta in the south and the Red River Delta in the north, up to three crops of rice, the main staple of Vietnamese diet, may be planted annually in these areas but parts of the land may also be used to raise other crops. Freshlocal Update
With a Nov. 9, 2009 opening, FreshLocal retail store and co-op was the brain child of manager Jean Schanen of Bremerton who grows a multitude of produce and fruit on her own roof-top garden and her property. She and others wanted a place to sell their food directly, particularly during the off-season when farmers markets are not open. A growing demand by consumers for fresh local food has also fueled the interest. FreshLocal is open to the public without paying a fee to join but food suppliers (currently about 25 members) can join the co-op for an annual fee of merely $50. Continue reading

Farmer George Local Meats

In addition to these jobs, he now has the ability to do USDA approved animal slaughter performed at the Puget Sound Meat Cooperative’s traveling meat processing unit. This long-needed service can enable people to have their approved farm-raised beef, swine, and goats and lamb available to sell at market if processing is performed by this unit. This week Joe used the processing unit for some local beef at a couple of stations in South Kitsap that have been approved for use by the processing unit. After the slaughter, he’ll take the meat to his shop for the hanging, cutting and wrapping. Advance appointments need to be made for this service as the traveling processing unit services six counties. Continue reading
