Local Saving and Investment In Kitsap

The role of community banks has had a high profile on the national level with the passage of massive new federal regulation of the financial sector. Not even Congress is able at this time to predict the fallout and the rules have yet to be written as to how the new law will be implemented. But this much is clear: community banks play a crucial role in financing the growth of local businesses which historically are responsible for creation of 60% or more of new jobs in recovery phases. The Art of Small Farm Conservation

Which brings me to why I wrote this post in the first place. Puget Sound, of which Kitsap is a vital component, has many of its own local food heroes including one named Paul Hunter. Paul is a farmer, an author, a teacher, a poet, a musician and a pressman/publisher. I was introduced to Paul through a mutual friend and fellow poet Gary Anderson of Bainbridge Island. As I pointed out earlier the KCAA has always tried to incorporate the arts with our message about local food and local farms so it seemed a perfect fit when I first became acquainted with Paul Hunter to invite him to speak to our KCAA members and friends. Normally around the first week in June is the time when Washington strawberries make their first appearance and I get really fired up about the harvest. Because of the cooler weather all of the plants are coming a bit later than expected and strawberries are no exception. They are worth the wait. Continue reading
